The journal's subject matter covers a wide range of fundamental scientific problems related to the development of energy as a technical basis for civilization. First of all, these are articles on the problems of developing Russia's energy sector, its fuel and energy complex, and power engineering. Articles are published on the problems of global, general, atomic, and space energy, energy economics and ecology, energy policy, electric power engineering and electrical engineering, thermal power engineering and thermal engineering, hydropower engineering and hydraulic engineering, thermal physics and electrophysics, as well as articles on other problems related to energy.

A large share of the journal's subject matter is occupied by problems of regulation and control of power plants, energy systems, and their associations, their mathematical and physical modeling for research and development of control systems for stationary and transient processes, problems of reliable and safe operation of power plants and systems.
